Hof van Liere

PIF2009 takes place at the beautiful University of Antwerp site "Hof van Liere". The construction of the Hof van Liere was initiated in 1516. The impressive building was finished around 1520. It was originally designed as a private home for Aert van Liere who was the mayor of Antwerp at that time. After a visit to the Hof van Liere in 1521, Albrecht Dürer described it as one of the most remarkable houses he had ever visited. In 1544 Aert van Liere sold his house to the city of Antwerp, who rented it to a Milanese family of bankers (the Salviatis) for three years. Afterwards it became the home of Portuguese and English merchants and also functioned as a Jesuit convent, a military academy and a military hospital. In May 1992 the building was completely renovated.
